Spring has sprung! The Equinox (Alban Eilir) has come to pass, and the days are getting longer. For this Druidic farmer, that means it’s time to get things into gear for the season. Incubators need to be started, gardens need to be prepped, birds need to be moved and maintenance needs to be done around the farm. It’s all about a fresh start for the coming summer.
Spring as a whole is a time of rebirth and renewal. Because of this, I’ve gotten into the habit of also using this time to do some “personal” spring cleaning along with the physical part. For me the whole New Year’s Resolution thing never made much sense. Why are you trying to start fresh smack dab in the middle of the long dark of winter? Spring makes so much more sense. Life is coming back; the days are getting longer. The new buds on the plants, the birds, the life returning all sing the same song of renewal and new beginnings.
My focus this year is going to be on diet and also setting up a better meditation practice. With regards to food, it’s more of a focus on eating healthier and less processed foods. Also, I’m cutting more meat out of my diet (yes, I’m a carnivore which is something for a future blog post). When it comes to meditation, I’m already doing fairly well. I meditate six days a week in the morning, but I could be going better. A ten minute sit is nice and all, but making fifteen is better. That or adding a walking meditation or a short Tai Chi routine to it. Whatever the case, the focus is on bettering what’s already there.
So maybe ask yourself what do you want to change? What part of your life needs a little renewal? So much more so than the middle of winter, this is the perfect time to focus on goals for the coming year. Make resolutions or focus on getting rid of bad habits and introducing newer healthier ones. As new life begins to stir, so to should your desire to start something new. Maybe focus on a specific goal be in professional, personal or spiritual. Even something as simple changing your diet or beginning and exercise routine. The bottom line is to just start something!
